MIXED TECHNIQUES - MATERIAL DESIGN
Totem "What is Ocean?" reflects on the contemporary condition of the ocean. The genesis of the project is rooted in Elias Sime's painting "Landscape 1" (2004) , which depicts ocean-like waves interwoven with plastic wrap and bottle caps. This contrast is the central theme of my totem.
Using various waste materials, I crafted a narrative highlighting the current state of our oceans. The pervasive pollution with microplastics and debris has blurred the line between what is organic and what is waste. Debris has become an integral part of the ocean, prompting scientists to consider microplastics a permanent chemical component.
Through this totem, I aim to provoke reflection. The ocean, once a symbol of purity, now cries out for help. By portraying it as a repository of waste, I hope to raise awareness of the urgent environmental crisis. "What is Ocean?" serves as a reminder that our actions impact the fate of the oceans, urging us to reconsider our impact on nature's delicate balance.
